TWENTY-THREE

Diamond drove back to the Minden sheriff’s station. I called Livvy while I walked with Spot down the streets of Diamond’s neighborhood.

“Are you still at Jennifer’s?” I said when Livvy answered.

“Yes. You wouldn’t believe how grand this is. No, scratch that. You would believe it. Anyway, Oliver cooked us a fabulous breakfast, and we ate in the breakfast room overlooking the lake. It’s quite distracting, sipping coffee, looking out at what might just be the grandest view ever. I didn’t realize that the view from the East Shore looking west is more dramatic than the view from the West Shore looking east.”

“Have you heard from the Connor siblings?”

“Yes. Sorry, I ramble on. Well, I suppose I should say they heard from me. I called first thing this morning and talked to Ciara. I told her that I wouldn’t be in until later because I was investigating other lodging. She asked why. I told her Lorcan fired me and wanted me to leave. She said I should ignore that and not to worry about Lorcan anymore because he won’t be coming back.”

That was a surprise.

Livvy continued. “She said that the officer who came by when you were there called first thing this morning to say that Lorcan’s boat was found all the way across the lake. Twelve miles away. He was going to go to the Connor house to ask some questions. So I asked Ciara what made her think Lorcan won’t be back, and she said that he never, ever goes out on his boat at night. And he never goes out on his boat in the winter, either. But he left the night before last and hasn’t been back. Therefore, she thinks that something bad happened to him.”

The thoughts seemed convoluted. “Something bad enough to make him disappear forever,” I said.

“Yeah.” Livvy continued, “Anyway, that sergeant, what’s his name?”

“Jack Santiago. He’s a sergeant with the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.”

“Right. He showed up at the Connor house this morning and asked if the red speedboat was, in fact, missing. Ciara told me she took him out back and down to the dock where Lorcan’s boat normally sits on the hoist. Of course, the boat was gone. So they’re going to fill out a missing person report.”

“Did she say if the other siblings were upset to learn that Lorcan may be missing?”

“She didn’t mention it, but I doubt they’d be very upset because they’re not that close. Cordial but no love.”

“I don’t suppose Lorcan’s siblings had any idea why Lorcan might have taken the boat out on the lake in the winter.”

“No. At least, Ciara didn’t give me that impression over the phone. Also, she told me that she, not Lorcan, was in charge, and she wanted me to keep living there.”

“I’d like to pay another visit to the Connor residence,” I said. “Would you be able to join me?”

“Yes, of course. Jennifer has been so sweet. But I don’t think her plans included having me underfoot in her house.”

“Then let’s meet at Georgia’s house later this afternoon.
